Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Gift of the Holy Spirit
All throughout the history God is the supreme giver of the gifts. Creation was a gift. Our lives were gifts. Then God made covenants as gifts for us in old testaments. Finally he gave his own son as a gift. Then he knew we sinners need a helper, advocate, counselor. He gave us Holy Spirit. Through Holy Spirit God gave us other gifts too.
Who can receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit?
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. – Acts 2:38
It is very clear that anybody who has true repentance will receive the gift. That is the only prerequisite. We have to bear in mind these gifts are not human capabilities but God given. So it is not a right but a privilege. Evan though it is a privilege it is not for the person but for Church.
These gifts are given freely to strengthen the Church.
What are the manifestations of the Gift of the Holy Spirit?
Gift of the Holy Spirits were first spoken in Isaiah 11:2-3. Seven manifestations of the same gift were mention there.
In New Testament Paul mentioned nine manifestations.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. (1 Cor 12 :1-6)
