It is a big day. A big day for the Church. A big day for each of us. A big day for the whole mankind. Today we are celebrating the day when all the mistakes of mankind were corrected.
Yes, Jesus died on the Cross to pay for our sins. Jesus was raised from the dead as a mark of acceptance of his sacrifice and obedience by the Father. But, all of those could have been meaningless if not for what we celebrate today did not happen.
We are celebrating the day we received back the Holy Spirit. We are celebrating the day we once again became sons and daughters of God; the day we received the power to call Almighty God, “Father”.
Today the Scripture readings explains two different events where we received the Holy Spirit. In one occasion, Jesus breathed on the apostles repeating what God did after making the shape of the man with clay. On another occasion, the apostles and the believers, who were with them, received the Holy Spirit through wind and fire. Erasing the punishment of speaking different languages due to pride, the apostles received the power to speak in one language so that everyone else could understand in their own languages.
We too receive the Holy Spirit in our lives in two different instances. We receive the Holy Spirit through Baptism as infants - for our own benefit and growth in faith. Later we receive the Holy Spirit through Confirmation as adults, to receive the power to serve others and to be witnesses of God’s love to the world.
While thanking and praising God the Father for His patience with us and for the Great Gift given to us, let us renew our dedication to the purpose. Let us have the correct understanding about the Father through the Holy Spirit and be a part of renewing the face of the earth.
