“I love you.” “I love you too.” In today’s society love has been mostly limited to this conversation. It won’t take much time to see what kind of love people have for each other, when one of them gets hurt by something done by the other.
We cannot satisfy Jesus with that kind of love. He wants to make sure that we love him wholeheartedly. If we do not choose him with that kind of love, he is not in a position to bless us fully.
He questioned Peter three times whether Peter love him. May be Jesus was not very happy that Peter and other disciples went back to their original trade. Jesus first proved to them that no matter how professional they were in their trade, they cannot obtain results without him. By asking whether Peter loves him three times, Jesus made Peter repent from what he did and determine not to abandon Jesus once again. By assigning a job to Peter when he said he loves Jesus, Jesus showed love should be shown by action not only by mere words.
Peter’s love for Jesus increased with the receiving of the Holy Spirit. Peter who denied the friendship with Jesus three times, Peter who was hiding for fear of the priests, now not only argued with them about Jesus, but also was joyful for having being persecuted and flogged because of Jesus.
Let us pray to the Holy Spirit for help to love Jesus with our heart, mind and knowledge and be ready to witnesses for him boldly and fearlessly.
