How long, do you think, it would take for a knowledgeable person to realize that he is wrong, or at least to realize he could be wrong? The chief priest and the members of Sanhedrin were wise people and they were conversant with the Scripture. Although they put Jesus to death out of jealousy, their conscience would have been accusing them. With everything that happened concerning Jesus, they were wise enough to compare the Scripture with the incidents. But, still they were not ready to change. Now they are getting ready to kill Paul. Could you guess the reason why they could not realize and accept their faults? It was the lack of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy spirit who helps us to correct ourselves. Without Him we are helpless, even if we have the desire.
When Paul was tried at the courts, he could create a dispute among the accusers making part of them take his side. Could you guess how he got this instant wisdom? That was the Holy Spirit who gave him the words, according to the promise of Jesus.
When we are not ready to accept our mistakes and are not ready to change ourselves, when we realize our mistakes the Holy Spirit is the answer. He can melt us, mould us and fill us with love to love others and to change for others out of love.
