He was a Good Man
Feast of St. Barnabas, Apostle
Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3; Psalm 98:1-6; Matthew 5:13-16
Link to Readings
He was a good man filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. That is what the first reading tells about Barnabas.
There are so much evidence to prove that statement. He sold his field and gave the money to the apostles for the common good. When he was sent to Antioch as a leader to look after the newly converted followers, instead of finding faults and giving instructions to correct them, he praised them and God for what was happening there. He rejoiced about what was happening there and encouraged them to continue like a real spiritual leader. Having set his faith in Jesus’ choice, Barnabas went looking for Paul while the other apostles were reluctant to contact him. He also let Paul lead the congregation. He vouched for Paul in front of the other apostles, and pleaded for Mark with Paul. Barnabas who always gave the leadership to Paul, never hesitated to correct him when necessary.
Although his real name was Joseph, the meaning of his popular name Barnabas is son of consolation. Lord used his submission to reveal His saving power to the nations. His light shone on a candle stand to give light to others.
What are the qualities we have in us which could be used by God in spreading His Kingdom?
