Establishing the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper by Jesus was not an isolated incident that happened out of nowhere. It was not a goodbye gift from Jesus to remember him after his death either. The establishment of the Holy Eucharist was decided from the beginning as well as the priesthood.
In the first reading we read about the first rehearsal of the Holy Eucharist. The first priest, Melchizedek brought and offered bread and wine to bless Abram and to give strength to fulfill the task given to him by God. The Gospel reading explains the second rehearsal. Jesus blessed five loaves of bread and two fish and distributed it among a crowd of more than five thousand, and collected twelve baskets full of left-overs. Jesus wanted to show the people that he is the one who is to give real bread from heaven which gives life; which gives us energy and willingness to listen to the Word.
Although venerating the Eucharist came as an answer to the refusal to believe the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, today the Eucharist has become a popular way of meeting with Jesus. But, the main idea of the Eucharist is to receive Jesus as a food, a food which gives us strength to understand and do the will of God and to become Christ like people who preach the Gospel through everything we do.
Let us make full use of the Eucharist and honour the sacrificial love of Jesus who gave himself to us.
