Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Divers (or different) kinds of Tongues
Divers (or different) kinds of Tongues
Have you ever heard people in a prayer meeting (or in gathering for a prayer) saying something from a language that you have never heard of? Read this. You have an idea what that was.
Diverse tongues is the most misunderstood and dynamic gift of the Holy Spirit. It is sad but the truth some people doesn’t use it since they are concern about how other people think about them. It is not our prayer language, but it can surface through intercession or any of our prayer or praise.
Here is what book of Isaiah says about diverse tongues.
Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, (Isaiah 28:11)
Gift of Tongues can be understood as Supernatural utterance through the power of the Holy Spirit in a person that manifests as spiritual language. The Holy Spirit energizes the tongue to edify believers through language and music. Part of this gift is ability to speak in foreign language(s) not previously studied. Here is a small story about it.
There was a situation that a person in USA has spoken in tongues for some time without knowing what she was speaking. One day one person visited to that church (Happens to be from SriLanka) and ask “How do you know my Native Language? (Which is Sinhalese)” Her reply was I don’t know. Visitor insisted you were praying in my language. Then she realized she was speaking in Sinhalese(Language use in SriLanka) while she was praying in tongues.
If we dig deeper there are three types of Tongues we can find in the bible.
1. An unknown tongue unto God - This part of the gift enhances the prayer, praise and worship and brings us more closely to God. More importantly this is the gift that we can use to refresh our spirit. Then God joins with us and Satan has no chance.
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 14:2)
2.A known tongue that is a sign to unbelievers – This text may be understood by others (non believers) and through this they might get converted, This is what happen in first Pentecost.
(I Corinthians 14:2; Acts 2:6).
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. (Acts 2:6)
3. A tongue that can be understood through interpretation . (I Corinthians 14:15)
