The sacred liturgy begins and ends with the sign of the cross made in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But how often do we think of ourselves as deeply and intimately related to each of the divine Persons, as adopted children of the Father precisely by reason of our union with the Son by the gift of the Spirit? Actually what sign of the cross reminds you?
If we can have a small idea about the bible we can see our relationship with God as in three parts.
1. Old Testament, the time before Jesus came
2. During the time where Jesus was on earth
3. Time after Jesus left the earth.
In each of these parts (or periods) , one or other of the three persons is prominent: the Creator-Father in the first one, Jesus the Son in the second and the Spirit in the third one. This doesn’t mean we have left the other two when we have a relationship with anyone. Does it? We can think Trinity is about a developing relationship with God, and each person in the Trinity.
When we are children we knew only about creator God or father God. Then Jesus and his crucifixion were introduced. Most of the what happen is our relationship with father God and Jesus doesn’t seem to be change much and Holy Spirit just remain as a dove without any effect on our lives. Is this how relationships work in our real lives? Will the relationship we had with our parents is the same at the time we were children? Doesn’t it change (mature) when we get matured? There are good reasons for these relationships to change over time as we get older and mature. Our persons are the same, but how we relate to each other changes. Doesn’t it? Then why it doesn’t happen with Trinity? Simple answer is we are not getting matured spiritually.
Here is where we are. Most people know there is a God. Some people even experience that God is present, loving, and/or personal. Others only sense God as a force. Those people who are aware of God as a person know they can reject God by sinning. They sometimes know when they're not at peace with God. Few people experience much more of God than this, but there is much, much more of God.
This is why Jesus says “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth". More specifically Jesus says Jesus has to leave in order to Holy Spirit to come. Why is that? There should be trust in the absence of Jesus in order to Holy Spirit to descend. When we are struggling with our difficulties (it may be a job loss, sickness, loneliness, problem child etc) most of the time we lose God (above paragraph). But if that troubled situation if we can trust Jesus and build the relationship then Holy Spirit will guide us and get us out from that trouble. When Jesus and Holy Spirit is in us Father God automatically comes and resides in us (Holy Trinity dwells in us).
There is one more important thing. Yes there is three persons but there is more. There is empty place there in that circle of communication. That circle of communication is not complete until we take our place among three.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. No. That is not right. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and of you.
Have a Trinitarian Life Style. Then we can really honour Our Father.
