There are times when we start to think that we know and understand everything but absolutely know nothing, like the disciples of Jesus in today’s Gospel reading. They were so sure that they have nothing to question about Jesus and fully believed that Jesus had come from God. Does that not happen to us most of the time too? When we start to think we know God fully, something happens which confuses us and sometimes makes us walk away from Him.
It was same with the believers that Paul found in Ephesus. They were thinking that they are good disciples but had not even heard of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit nobody can have faith, and nobody can become a believer. The Holy Spirit is the One who explains everything and makes it clear to us. Without Him we know nothing because He is the assurance of truth. Therefore, it is better to be anxious about and desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit, especially during this week heading to the Feast of Pentecost.
If the Holy Spirit explains to us the Psalm today which reads “Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee before him. As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, let the wicked perish before God.”, we can be joyful even in the midst of a disaster without getting angry or hopeless
