Could you remember the parable Jesus told about a man who handed over his wealth to three of his servants and went abroad (Mt. 25:14-29)? How about the parable of the landowner who handed over his well guarded vineyard to some tenants and moved to another place (Mt. 21:33-41) and also the parable of two sons who were asked to go and work at the vineyard (Mt. 21:28-32)?
I have a feeling that Jesus was preparing his disciples (and us his disciples to be) for the day we are celebrating today - his ascension. On that day Jesus handed over everything he did during his time in the world to his disciples and went back to heaven with a promise to come back in the same way he went to heaven. Unlike those servants or tenants or sons, he promised us the power - everything we need - to do the job. He did not just go away. He uploaded his power - his Holy Spirit - on us so that we may have online help with a click.
The Church Jesus built is in our charge today. Let us keep remembering what would happen to us if we do not do the job to his satisfaction. Let us keep spreading the good news, not out of fear of the repercussions, but out of love and gratitude for everything Jesus did for us.
